Shelia Jared, licensed practical nurse at Life Care Center of Sparta, Tennessee, received Life Care Centers of America’s Eastern Division Whatever It Takes And Then Some Award on Aug. 28, 2019, for her dedication to customer service.
Executives from Life Care awarded Jared a cash prize during an awards ceremony at the company’s headquarters in Cleveland, Tennessee. She was chosen from among thousands of associates in the Eastern Division and was one of only eight associates from Life Care’s more than 200 facilities nationwide to receive the award.
Jared, together with another associate, has put a lot of work into creating picture albums for residents’ family members with photos of their loved ones. She presents the albums to the families for birthdays, holidays and other occasions.
During the 2018 fundraising season for Alzheimer’s Tennessee, Jared spent many hours of her own time making Christmas trees to sell and took the lead in creating the Life Care Center of Sparta cookbook, which was also sold as a fundraiser for Alzheimer’s Tennessee. In all, she raised a little over $8,700 to support those diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and their families.
Jared also uses her own time to decorate the Alzheimer’s unit for the holidays. For her, working with dementia patients is very personal.
“It’s something I’m really passionate about,” Jared said. “My grandmother had Alzheimer’s, and I helped take care of her. That’s the reason I’m at Life Care in the memory unit. There’s quality of life for everyone, no matter what stage of dementia or Alzheimer’s they’re at. You’ve just got to find out their likes, their stories and bring that to them for them to come back to you a little bit – and that happens a lot in our unit.”
Life Care Centers of America’s Whatever It Takes And Then Some program rewards associates for extraordinary acts of kindness. Monthly awards are presented in Life Care facilities nationwide based on nominations from fellow associates, family members, residents and guests. Each facility then chooses an annual winner, from which the divisional winners are selected.
“Dedicated caregivers routinely go far above and beyond their job descriptions, and Shelia Jared certainly demonstrates by his example their professionalism and compassion for the residents they serve,” said Beecher Hunter, Life Care president. “We are proud of Shelia and the thousands she represents in their selfless approach to the needs of others.”
